Yasmin at Kong Heng is a pleasant and small museum yet very simple place for you to relax for a while. It has a simple but full of memories of Yasmin Ahmad the film maker, the advertisement, the designer story writer which showed how the great character Yasmin Ahmad was who died at mid age. The late Yasmin Ahmad, through her films and works, embodied many things that describe Malaysians perfectly. It helps folks relive what it means to be Malaysian in the simplest, purest way. In an effort to keep legendary film director Yasmin Ahmad’s legacy alive and to inspire a new generation of local film directors, a group of friends and fans of Yasmin took on the idea of her mother, Hajjah Inom Binti Yon, to establish a gallery to celebrate Yasmin’s work and life.
The Yasmin experience started as you climbed up the narrow staircase. Pictures and quotes of the late director were placed on the walls; naturally witty and canny. The surrounding and the ambiance is relaxing and chilling especially when you come around hi-tea time. So wonderful to just sit in their comfortable corner either on a stool, bench or the bean bags and watch these sentimental advertisements. It also displays alot of pictures bearing the things the late Yasmin use to bring and a little story based on that. Definitely a must if you’re a fan of Yasmin Ahmad’s work!
Besides the space itself, there are also ongoing plans to create an ‘Augmented Reality’ series for the museum, using the city’s landmarks where Yasmin shot her movies — such as the state mosque, the Ipoh railway station, the Datuk Sagor food court and SMK St Michael’s Institution — featured in films like Muallaf (2008) and Talentime (2009). All the landmarks are near the museum.
The museum is opened on weekends from 10.00 a.m to 4.00 p.m.
(1.00 p.m 1.30 p.m closed for lunch)
